Meet Me at
the River
by B. J. Robinson
Then the
angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing
from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of
the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve
crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are
for the healing of the nations. - Revelation
22:1-2
For the
Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of
the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will
rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up
together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be
with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words. – Thessalonians 4:16-18
I
lost my mother to cancer March 4, 1998, and February 23 is her birthday, so I
found myself thinking of her and of seeing her again. This March, she will have
been in Jesus’ arms seventeen years. They say time heals all wounds, but my
heart still misses her as much as ever. Only Jesus saves and heals. Since her
death, I also lost my youngest sister, and loved ones and friends have lost
those they love as well. It is my hope that through this devotional and God’s
Word, others who have lost loved ones will continue to keep faith and hope
alive.
After
Mother’s loss, I heard The Kingdom Heirs sing “Good News From the Graveyard,”
and the song helped, but Robert Lowry wrote a hymn in 1864, “Shall We Gather at
the River?” which eased my heart even more.
These
songs and the above-captioned scriptures helped me in my time of need. God sent
His Comforter and though I still miss my mother dearly, I know she’s no longer
in pain, and I will see her again when we gather at the river. As Robert Lowry
wrote, “Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.”
I
pray you will be comforted by the Bible verses and hymns as I was, but most of
all, I pray you will accept Jesus and let Him heal your heart and save you if
you have not already, so you will meet your loved ones at that beautiful,
flowing, crystal river and see them again. Friends and loved ones, I hope to
see you there one day. Meet me at the river.
